6/18/24 – Family and Friends

The Atlanta stopover was difficult to plan because it was almost impossible to find an RV park close to our friends and family due to city restrictions and camps being full already when we were looking for a place a few months ago.  But in both cases, the ones we picked were very nice and close enough for what we needed.

On the north side we stayed at a small camp in Cummings, GA with two small lakes.  It was called (cleverly) Twin Lakes RV Park.  The first day we had a nice spot open to the lakes but by the second day we were “squeezed” between two other RVs and lost our scenic view.  Oh well.  Such is the RV life!  The lakes were nice with a walking trail around in the woods and a colorful fountain in the middle.  And it was only about 10 miles from our north Atlanta friends.

Joey drove up to meet us when we arrived.  He got to see the whole process of getting set up.  And we had lunch and a nice visit.

That evening we drove down to the Buckhead area to see David & Lydia.  Being Sunday, the traffic was not too bad, and we had a great visit and dinner.  The next day Roger & Sheryl came over to see the RV and then we went out to dinner.

Tuesday, Art came over to see the RV and have lunch.  We had a great visit and learned a lot about tattoo apprenticeships!  We went over to Roger and Sheryl’s after lunch for another quick visit.

In the meantime, we were having trouble in the RV with the transfer switch (an electronic box that senses voltage from either the power cord or the genset and sends it to the converter) and were looking for a dealer in the area to work us in to their schedule and troubleshoot the problem.  We not only found a dealer, but they were great fitting us in and, as fate would have it, were only about 5 miles from our next stop!   We moved during rush hour from north to south Atlanta to make our 10:30 appointment.  And all worked out as planned!  Turns out it just needed some specific rewiring.  Thanks go out to Southern RV in McDonough, GA.

The next park was just off I-75 in McDonough.  We were directed to the far end of the park, which turned out to be the “new” section, and a very nice hook up.  However, as we said, it was still about 30 miles from our son’s house in Peachtree City.   Fortunately, it was also a very nice drive (except for the rush hour traffic) through the wooded countryside.

We got together with the family twice.  Once for dinner in town and once for a swim “meet” between the girl’s neighborhood team and another neighborhood team as the host at their pool.  “Our” team was very good, and our granddaughters did extremely well, even if we are a little prejudiced.

As a note, there are 12 HOA neighborhoods in the Peachtree City area that each have a local pool.  Each HOA sponsors a swim team with their 6 – 18-year-olds.  During June, they compete against each other in alternating pools.  It is a big family event and goes surprisingly fast. They swim for time so each swimmer only swims in one heat per race.  The pool was only 25 meters long and the races were typically one or two lengths.  They held 74 heats!

Oh, and by the way, we woke up in McDonough and discovered we had been ‘ducked’!  For those of you that don’t own a Jeep, ducking is leaving a small rubber duck on someone’s jeep.  It’s a way of saying “Nice Jeep!”  Now you will start noticing all those ducks in the front window of Jeeps.

So, all in all, the Atlanta week went very well (we got a lot of visiting done) and we are now off to the east coast!
